change by educating and inspiring consumers across the US to take action.

Changing The Weight of the Nation

This spring, to amplify The Weight of the Nation public service campaign, HBO and partners (IOM, CDC, NIH, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente) will align with Whole Kids Foundation and GLOBALTAP to mobilize change by educating and inspiring consumers across the US to take action. Starting in schools and extending into communities nationwide, HBO will enhance partner tools, resources and relevant initiatives to further magnify the public health campaign surrounding the premiere of The Weight of the Nation.

Kickoff Events

On May 1st, HBO will collaborate with 10+ markets to host in-school events featuring an unveiling of Whole Kids Foundation salad bars and GLOBALTAP tap stations along with remarks by local officials/mayors, HBO executives, partner representatives and/or school officials. Following the remarks HBO and partners will screen a portion of the documentary series during lunch, in celebration of the new salad bar from HBO and WKF in the school cafeteria.

Long Term Support

  • HBO and partner organizations pledge to install 100 salad bars and water taps total throughout U.S. schools by September 2012.

Partners

Following the launch events, partners would provide in-kind support by utilizing their established communication platforms (i.e. online, in-store, etc.) to educate and inform consumers across the US about obesity prevention and the premiere of The Weight of the Nation.

  • Whole Kids Foundation (WKF)

WKF's mission is to support schools and inspire families to improve children's nutrition by increasing the availability and consumption of nutritious food in schools. In partnership with Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools, they've funded more than 1200 salad bars and have a list of more than 1000 school applicants eligible for grants. Using this existing initiative as a platform to further The Weight of the Nation messaging and encourage healthy consumption amongst America's children, HBO is partnering with WKF by funding grants with plans to roll out approximately 100 salad bars in schools across the US by September 2012.

  • Global Tap

GLOBALTAP is a new organization that works to provide access to free, filtered water, in municipalities and schools around the nation, and have installed about 200 tap stations. To further this initiative and help spur a national dialogue on obesity, HBO would plan to install 100 permanent tap stations in schools across the US, featuring a backsplash listing facts about the importance of drinking water instead of sugary beverages.
