Build a healthy support network

Take This Action Commit to this action for yourself to help overcome the obesity epidemic.

Friends and family can have a significant impact on what and how much we eat, and how active we are. Just think about what you do when you hang out with friends - do you go for a walk or play a game of Frisbee, or do you watch TV or eat out? It's important to notice how "social networks" - friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, etc. - either support or prevent positive health behaviors.

Assess Your Social Network

Think about your social network. Where does your support come from?

  • Is it adequate / does it meet your needs? If not, what is missing?
  • Do people in your life support your weight loss or maintenance efforts? If not, can you identify people who will?
  • How can you be a positive influence in your social group?
  • Suggest going for a walk, hike or another physical activity instead of watching TV.
  • Make healthy snacks/meals for your friends, and encourage them to do the same.
  • Support your family, friends and co-workers in their weight-loss or maintenance attempts.
