Breast milk contains the ideal mix of easily digestible nutrients for a growing baby. It also helps to the mother and child to form a close bond. It may reduce the risk of childhood obesity and several chronic diseases in both mother and infant50. Some of the nutrients in breast milk also help protect an infant against some common childhood illnesses and infections, such as diarrhea, middle ear infections, and certain lung infections. There are challenges to maintaining breastfeeding including, work schedules, work conditions, and lack of social support. Many breastfeeding resources for mothers and their families can provide useful ideas to make continued breastfeeding possible.

  • Support mothers to have time and flexibility to breastfeed.
  • Talk to your physician about breastfeeding plans, and ask how to get help with breastfeeding.
  • Ask about breastfeeding support when choosing a hospital.
  • Understand that a small number of mothers with certain illnesses or exposure to specific drugs or medicines should not breastfeed.
  • Learn about the benefits of breastfeeding.
  • Talk to your partner/spouse and family about your interest in breastfeeding.
  • Do you have friends who breastfed and never used formula? Ask your friends about their experience breastfeeding. Women with friends who have breastfed successfully are more likely to choose to breastfeed.
