Body mass index (BMI) is the most common and simplest measure for determining overweight and obesity. BMI assesses an individual's weight given his/her height. BMI is not a direct measure of excess body fat, but it is a good indicator for many people. However, it may overestimate body fat in those who have a muscular build and it may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.

For adults, a BMI at or above 25 is considered overweight and a BMI at or above 30 is considered obese.
